MackSolo Team Update β Day 67 βοΈ π
Woooooohooooo Mack has safely landed in #Socotra, #Yemen πΎπͺ, after his second-longest flight (approx. 1000 NM/2000km) over the sea π. It was far from an easy stopover to organise so a huge thank π you to all making this landing possible (defense force agreements from various countries involved, but also @easyyemen.tours and Tahseen Aviation Services.
So what was up today? Having taken off from #Seychelles this morning, Mack crossed the equator π, quite early into the flight, and, flew back into the northern hemisphere.
Have you ever heard that in the northern πhemisphere water would swirl π differently (counter-clockwise) than in the southern π(clockwise) hemisphere, due to the rotation of the earth ? Water draining in a loo π½would therefore swirl in opposite πβοΈ directions. Is this true π€¨ and would that have an effect on winds π¨ and therefore perhaps also on an airplane when it flies?
Yes, it's true πͺ π€! It's called the Coriolis effect and as said, is due to the rotation of the Earth. North of the equator, it will slowly push a plane away from its route to the right; and to the left south of the Equator. To counter this effect, theoretically, Mack has to slightly bank Sharky βοΈπ¦ to the other direction, but the required bank angle is so tiny, that in fact, you can almost ignore it. The pilot and the planeβs autopilot system actually apply it almost automatically.
