MackSolo Team Update – Day 123 ✈️ 🌍
Mack is in #Ketchikan, #Alaska, and in the air for the Boeing Field in #Seattle, #washingtonstate
The Macksolo Team, based mainly in Europe, needs a shift in mindset now that Mack has "time-traveled" from the Eastern time zones into the Western ones 🤔. Till 2-3 days ago, Mack was in Asia and ahead of European time. Flight-following happened late evening and into the night 🌚. Now that Mack has arrived in the #USA, time zones have inverted and the Team is ahead of Mack's time, with flights now starting early evening for them. We're all on a weird time-warp... ⏱🌪
So whilst time zones are a weird concept, let's introduce another weird, mental construct: latitude and longitude 😵💫. Why? Because, since Mack has left #Bulgaria for his solo world record attempt, he is now more or less at the opposite side of the globe, in longitude that is... not distance. Imagine slices of an orange…
How so and what are latitude and longitude?
Well, to help locate where a place is in the world, people use imaginary horizontal en vertical lines:
* To find out how far north or south a place is, lines of latitude are used. These lines run parallel to the Equator.
* To find out how far east or west a place is, lines of longitude are used. These lines run from the top of the Earth to the bottom.
Now introducing hemispheres:
The Equator is at the center of the lines of latitude and is at 0° latitude. Anything lying south of the Equator is in the Southern Hemisphere and is labeled °S. Anything lying north of the Equator is in the Northern Hemisphere and is labeled °N. The North Pole is 90° N and the South Pole is 90° S.
The line labeled 0° longitude is called the Prime Meridian or the Greenwich Meridian and runs through London . Anything lying east of the Greenwich Meridian is in the Eastern Hemisphere and is labeled °E. Anything lying west of the Greenwich Meridian is in the Western Hemisphere and is labeled °W.
HELP!!! Extreme Nerd alert!!!🤓😬 What about Mack?
Well, Mack's starting point, Sofia, Bulgaria, on a longitudinal level, is roughly at 23° East. Mack is supposed to circumnavigate the world and land again at his starting point, which is 360° in total. Halfway in longitude would therefore be 180° East or West. Well imagine sticking a needle at the Sofia location and bring it out exactly at the opposite side of the globe, on the same longitude.

23°) = 157° 🤯
➡️ This longitude corresponds to roughly
the middle of Mack's flight from Dutch
Harbor to Anchorage a few days ago.
