MackSolo Team Update β Day 118 βοΈ π
THE DAY MACK LANDS A DAY BEFORE HE TOOK OFF...
WOOOOOOOHOOOOO!!!! Mack did it! π₯³πππΎ This was the single most #challenging #flight of his entire #Guinnessworldrecord #attempt!
Goodbye Japan π―π΅ π! Hello #America! πΊπΈ πͺ
After 10 hours in the air, Mack and Sharky π¦βοΈ have arrived safely in #CascoCove, #USA, one of the most remote landing strips on Earth. Casco Cove is the most western of the American Aleutian Islands - a chain of 14 large and 55 smaller volcanic islands wedged between #Alaska and #Kamtchatka, south of the Bering Strait.
Mack is now an official TIME TRAVELLER! β±
Between taking off from Kushiro π―π―π΅ and arriving at Casco Cove, he WON AN ENTIRE CALENDAR DAY. How so? Well, he took off early morning of the 31st of July from Japan and arrived 10 hours later, on the 30th of July, in the USA. He had only covered a distance of 1350 NM though. That is roughly the distance between London and Marrakesh or Washington DC and Mexico.
How is that possible?
Ever heard about the INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE? It's a virtual line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and marks the divide between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. It is not straight but zigzags to avoid political and country borders and to not cut some countries in half. On the map πΊ (see image) it's shown as a black line.
So, When you cross the International Date Line from West to East, you subtract a day, and if you cross the line from East to West, you add a day. Do you know other funny geographical trivia most people have never heard about? π
π
Mack and the team would like to express an enormous thank you π to anyone having been involved in achieving this very intense and challenging leg πͺ. Time for bed for Mack and the team π€π!
